Appreciating the AppleWhen the leaves change into colorful golds and rich reds, and cooler weather calls for a light jacket and a warm mug, apples say "fall." Versatile and flavorful, they can be used in almost any type of dish - from crispy salads to delectable desserts, and everything in between. As one of the most cultivated tree fruits throughout the world, Americans consume about 45 pounds of apples a year. Now that's a lot of fruit!! Supporting the old proverb, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away," research has suggested that apples may reduce the risk of cancer - especially colon, prostate, and lung varieties. In addition, it may help to ward off heart disease, aid in weight loss, and control cholesterol. Apples are also packed with 5 grams of fiber and natural sugars which is great for warding off mid-afternoon hunger pains. Try this with a handful of almonds for a little protein instead of those alleged "health bars," which can be loaded with hidden sugars. Ask Ms. SkinIn last month's column I addressed the issue of eliminating dairy to help heal acne. I would like to clarify that there are a few sources of dairy that should not be aggravating. They are yogurt (which also contains acidophilus to support healthy skin) and sheep and goat milk cheeses. Many people that are also lactose intolerant can easily digest these products. Many alternative medicine practitioners and nutritionists like Jonathan V. Wright, M.D. and Adele Davis have also claimed that wheat intake can also contribute to the problem. Recent studies confirm that acne thrives when the diet is rich in high glycemic foods. High-carbohydrate foods increase glucose levels during digestion. This raises insulin production, which then triggers hormones that secrete sebum. Obviously, the sebum attracts more acne-promoting bacteria. According to many dermatologists, a wide body of anecdotal evidence supports the theory that a low-carbohydrate diet may be the best first-defense against acne for patients of all ages. Caramel Apple BreadWith its caramel topping, this bread makes a delicious treat! Low on fat, but big on flavor, it's a winner that never lasts long at my house. 1 cup Yogurt
