The Blossom Within

Though Mother Nature continues her wintry presence, I hear the rumor that spring is right around the corner!

As I enjoy an exhilarating walk with my dog in the wintry landscape, I notice that the buds on trees and bushes are also waiting patiently to burst forth with life.

When we can appreciate the full beauty of each stage of the cycle of life, from bud to blossom to disintegration, we will feel more at home with our own earthly process.

Each stage we go through has its time of fulfillment and recession, as do all living things.

Even though most of us embrace the moment of full blossoming of our pursuits most of all. When we can feel the wisdom contained in the budding, blossoming, and dissolution of a simple flower, we begin to feel it everywhere. In each moment that comes and goes, in each sunrise and sunset, in every hello and goodbye, as the very essence of the pulsating ebb and flow of existence.

I invite you to find peace in the stillness before the blossoming,
Beth Ann

Skin Tips of the Month.

Avoid greasy hand creams if you're prone to breakouts.

You may suffer from a condition I call 'hand cream acne' if you sleep with hands on your face at night! We are more likely to use hand cream during the cold winter months than during the summer to help alleviate the dryness. Most often this cream is applied right before you go to bed. If you sleep on your side with your hands on your face, the cream may be getting into the skin and clogging the pores. If you find this happening to you, sleep with cotton gloves or change to a lighter lotion.

Don't neglect your neck.

The friction caused by turtle necks and wool fibers can rub on the neck causing it to be dry and irritated. Be sure to use a hydrating cream on your neck twice a day along with your face to replenish essential moisture. Also, treat it to a gentle exfoliant twice a week to remove dead skin cells. As a footnote; you should actually be doing this all year round, as your neck will show your age before your face, so treat it with the respect it deserves!

Take care at the gym.

After working out at the gym, make sure to wash your face, use an alcohol-free toner and a nourishing moisturizer. At the end of a workout, the salts created from perspiration can have a drying effect on the skin, combined with the cold, dry air outside and the heat in your car. So removing the salts and locking in moisture will greatly reduce dry skin.

Vegetable Barley Soup..

Disclosure; this recipe makes a lot, with plenty to freeze to get you to the spring!

11/2 cups Cooked Barley
1/4 cup Olive Oil
6 Carrots, diced
6 stalks Celery, diced
1 large Onion, diced
4 Parsnips, diced
Salt and Pepper
4 28 oz. cans diced Tomatoes
2 15.5 oz. Cans Chickpeas
1 bunch chopped Kale, (optional)

  • Cook the barley according to package directions.
  • Meanwhile heat oil in large soup pot. Add the carrots, celery, onions, parsnips, 1 tsp. salt and 1/2 tsp. pepper. Cook covered, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables begin to soften, 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Add the tomatoes and their juices and 8 cups water. Simmer, stirring now and then until soup has slightly thickened and the vegetables are tender, 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Stir in chickpeas and cooked barley until heated through.
  • If desired right before serving, add kale till wilted.
