Over the holidays I had the pleasure of seeing the movie "The Pursuit of Happyness." It is a sweet movie with a simple but powerful message that we can't hear enough.

What makes each of us happy varies from one person to the next, but the following quote from great philosopher and economist John Stuart Mill, seems to hit home on the most important concepts of living a happy life.

"Those only are happy who have their minds fixed on some object other than their happiness; on the happiness of others, on the improvement of mankind, even on some art or pursuit, followed not as a means, but as itself and ideal end. Aiming thus at something else, they find happiness by the way."

Sometimes when we are feeling down, the words of others can lift us up again. Often a simple quote can impact us more than reading an entire book on the subject.

"The secret of happiness is freedom, and the secret of freedom is courage." - Thucydides, Greek Philosopher

Courage is the ability to do things that you fear, things that make you uncomfortable, things that help you find out more about yourself and what you're made of. It takes courage to try new things, but it is only when we venture out of our comfort zone that we grow. And in the end, it is our growth and fulfillment as human beings that bring us happiness.

Wishing you a New Year of Growth & Happiness,
                                    Beth Ann

Surprising Sunscreen News

This past August, researchers at the University of California gained wide media attention when they announced that three commonly used sunscreen ingredients can produce skin-damaging free radicals if the product is not applied at regular intervals throughout the day when exposed to sunlight.

This is a fact that I have been sharing with my clients for years! This information is relevant to chemical sunscreens. I have chosen to carry only safe natural sunblocks that contain only zinc and titanium dioxide, and do not contribute to skin damage.

Please remember that no sunscreen blocks UV light completely, regardless of its SPF. So try to cover up as much as possible when exposed to direct sunlight, sitting by a window or in a car. UVA rays - the sun's aging rays that are linked to melanoma - can penetrate glass. For this reason, wearing a daily sunscreen year round is so important.

For all you carrot cake fans, this is a slightly healthier version, sorry no cream cheese frosting! Also it makes a nice small recipe, so you're not stuck with a huge cake.

1 cup Flour
1 tsp. Baking Soda
1/2 tsp. Cardamom or 1 tsp. Cinnamon
1/4 tsp. Salt
2 Eggs
1/2 cup White Sugar
1/3 cup packed Light Brown Sugar
1/3 cup Plain Yogurt
1 cup packed finely shredded Carrots (about 2 medium)

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush an 8 inch round pan with oil. Place a round of waxed paper in the bottom; brush with oil, and dust with flour.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, cardamom and salt. In a small bowl, whisk eggs, sugars, and yogurt until smooth. Gently mix egg mixture into dry ingredients until moistened; mix in carrots. Pour into pan.
  3. Bake until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean., 40 - 45 minutes.
  4. Cool in pan 15 minutes, then remove. When cool, sprinkle with confectioners sugar if desired.
