Spring Clean Your Life!

The new promise and energy of the season seems to prompt many of us to want to cleanse and purge unnecessary clutter from our lives. If you are feeling overwhelmed, and finding it difficult to know where to start, here's a powerful yet simple plan to help you jump-start your engine.

1. Throw out 50 things. Clean out the junk drawers. Old receipts, dried up Krazy Glue, catalogues, keys that haven't opened anything for years. Make a list of what you've thrown or given away. Every time you look at it, you'll feel good.

2. Examine your mental clutter. This is when you really get into the good stuff, it's the mental clutter that drags you down and holds you back. Make a list of the old fears, negative assumptions and past "mistakes" that weigh you down. Commit to letting them go. If you are feeling challenged, consider seeking professional support.  You can't move forward into the next segment of your life - the one that's filled with promise, joy, and fulfillment when you're constantly being sucked into the past.

3. Add up the items on both your lists. Keep going until they total 50. Magazines and catalogues count as only one thing.

So what are you going to throw away? What are you going to let go of? Write it down; throw it out. You're too radiant to allow your light to be dimmed by the irrelevant debris of the past, either physical or emotional. Spring is here my friend and it's time to lighten up!

Save Your Pet's Health

I am heartbroken over the recent animal deaths due to widespread commercial pet food contamination. I send my condolences to everyone who has been affected and offer my prayers for a healthy recovery for the animals who are still sick.

I have long known that most commercial foods don't offer our animal friends "premium" nutrition. In fact the quality standards for pet foods is notoriously low.

Did you know that much of the meat used is from diseased animals. You may not recall an expose of several years ago. It was made public that pet companies were actually recycling euthanized pets into the food!

I have always encouraged my friends and clients to give Innova food to their pets, as recommended to me by Teri Roche at www.caninenut.com.

She is an animal nutritionist and amazing woman that has been a godsend to me over the years!

You can find the closest place to purchase Innova at www.naturapet.com

De-Stress for Better Skin

Most of my clients who experience occasional breakouts, tell me they believe that stress is a main contributor to their acne problems. Stress is one of the most common reasons for acne breakouts in adults, as it directly affects the body's hormone production. The body responds to elevated stress by releasing high levels of cortisol, a stress-fighting hormone into the bloodstream. And while cortisol fights stress, it can trigger the production of other hormones, including sebum, which can also cause acne.

Stress is something we can't avoid, only try to manage. Take the time to find a healthy outlet that works for you. Perhaps a walk in nature or workout at the gym, a facial or massage, a hot aromatherapy bubble bath. Reach out and call a friend, read something uplifting or watch a funny movie. It's trite but true, laughter is the best medicine!

Coo-Coo for Coconut Part 2

Last month, I shared some of the benefits of coconut for your skin and hair.

Did you know that research has shown that coconut oil in your diet may also help reduce heart disease risk, fight viruses and bacteria, and promote strong bones and teeth?

Despite all the research highlighting the benefits of coconut oil, the FDA recommends avoiding it because it is high in saturated fat. So why has this seemingly healthful fat been so misunderstood and maligned?

There are a lot of misconceptions about saturated fats. There are a number of different saturated fats, and the ones found in coconut oil, similar to ones found in nuts, are quite healthy. These oils can actually improve your cholesterol ratio by increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol.

Curried Carrot & Apple Soup

Makes 8 servings, generous 3/4 cup each.

1 Tbs. Olive Oil
1 large Onion, chopped
1 stalk Celery, finely chopped
1 Tbs. Curry Powder
5 large Carrots, thinly sliced
2 large Apples, peeled and coarsely chopped
1 Bay Leaf
4 1/2 cups Chicken or Vegetable Broth
Salt and Pepper to taste
2 Tbs. plain Yogurt for garnish (optional)
1 Tbs. fresh Parsley, Dill or Basil for garnish (optional)

  1. Heat oil in soup pot over medium heat. Stir in onion and celery; cook until the onion is translucent, do not brown.
  2. Stir in curry powder, then add carrots, apples and bay leaf. Stir well over medium heat for 2 minutes, then add broth, salt and pepper. Bring mixture to a low boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover tightly and simmer until carrots and apples are tender, 20 to 25 minutes.
  3. Remove the bay leaf. Using a large slotted spoon, transfer the soup solids to a food processor, adding about 1/2 cup of the broth; process to a smooth puree. Pour the puree back into the soup. Reheat and garnish each serving with a dab of yogurt and herbs.
